Red Sea Gateway Terminal is the first greenfield, world–class container terminal in Jeddah Islamic port (JIP), that will have the largest and latest cranes worldwide. These cranes will be the first of its kind in Saudi Arabia capable of tandem handling two full 40-foot equivalent units (FEU) or four 20-foot equivalent units (TEU) with an outreach of 23 rows-across and lifting capacity of 85 tonnes under the spreader thereby provide shipping lines with high-quality services enabling great improvements in container handling productivity and turnaround times. Among its significant features is the dredging of its 300m wide dedicated navigation channel and deep water draught up to 18m which enables receiving the new generation of 12,000TEU+ containerships.
These new facilities and cutting–edge technology will enhance JIP’s overall capability through its layout, design, state-of-the-art equipment to compete with the top 10 largest ports in the world. RSGT took the lead in implementing the highest safety and environmental international standards by designing the terminal facilities and equipment according to seismic buildings code and using IP cement in the construction of marine berths quay wall huge concrete blocks (500 tons) to participate with global efforts to reduce Global warming. RSGT has additionally given priority to develop JIP’s overall traffic network through the preparation of traffic micro simulation studies with a belief to facilitate the flow of goods for local market.
RSGT is a vivid example of private and government sectors participation in developing and supporting the country’s infrastructure - the first BOT port development agreement in KSA, where the private sector invested nearly SAR 2 billion funded by Saudi banks. RSGT was honored in 2007 with the innovative prestigious IFN Ijara Deal of the Year award for its best Islamic project financing deal and Euromoney’s Middle East Transport Deal of the Year award.
RSGT will signal the start of a new era for JIP as a regional container hub by adding 45% to its annual capacity, equivalent to 1.5million TEU’s.
RSGT contributes as an engine of growth for Saudi Arabia's economy and national human capital development by creating thousands of job opportunities, training programs, providing investment opportunities for national and foreign companies and enhancing logistics, trade & volume-business in the Kingdom – thereby increasing the scope of Saudi Arabia’s maritime transport sector |
